Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against ‘premature restrictions’ of open-weight models

Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir and over twenty other US tech companies published a joint letter on Friday urging policymakers to avoid premature restrictions on open-weight AI models. These companies warn that such measures would harm competition and push innovation overseas. The letter follows growing concerns about the rise of Chinese open-weight models, such as Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, which outperforms some American offerings across several benchmarks. OpenAI and Anthropic, each valued at nearly $1 trillion and preparing for potential IPOs, did not sign the letter. White House advisor Michael Kratsios accused Moonshot AI of developing its model by distilling Anthropic’s technology.
