MSCI has launched a consultation on new financial screening criteria that could result in the removal of Strategy and Metaplanet from its global indexes. Both companies, which specialize in accumulating Bitcoin through convertible debt offerings and equity issuance, fail all five proposed financial tests. The removal of Strategy alone could trigger between $1.8 billion and $2.0 billion in selling pressure from passive funds. JPMorgan estimated that if other index providers like FTSE Russell or S&P followed this approach, total passive outflows could reach as high as $8.8 billion. The final decision is scheduled for November 11, 2026, when the index review takes place.
