Metaplanet’s $13M acquisition and Japan’s Bitcoin moment, explained

Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company, is acquiring Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen (approximately $13 million) to obtain a brokerage license and build a Bitcoin-focused financial ecosystem in Japan. This acquisition, the first step in Project Nova, represents a strategic shift: instead of passively holding Bitcoin, the company now intends to offer Bitcoin-linked investment products in a regulated market. Metaplanet currently holds 2,235 BTC following a recent purchase of 135 BTC, and has access to a $500 million BTC-collateralized credit facility. The main challenge lies in obtaining regulatory approvals from Japan’s Financial Services Agency before launching any new products.
