Metaplanet reports 250,000 Japanese retail shareholders amid bear market

The Tokyo-listed Japanese company Metaplanet surpassed 250,000 retail shareholders by late June 2026, representing a 66% increase in just a few months, even as market conditions remained decidedly bearish. This shareholder base translates to roughly 1 in 600 Japanese residents, with CEO Simon Gerovich aiming to exceed one million shareholders long-term. Originally a hotel operator, Metaplanet pivoted to a Bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024 and now holds 40,177 BTC, making it the world’s third-largest corporate Bitcoin holder. As of May 31, 2026, the company’s net asset value stood at 457.6 billion yen. To finance its purchases, the company has relied on equity raises, zero-interest bonds, and warrants.
