Tucker Bryant, a 32-year-old former Google employee, created ChatTJB, a chatbot that looks identical to Silicon Valley AI assistants but runs without any language model or algorithm. Responses are typed manually by Bryant himself or by over 10,000 volunteers who have signed up as « Average Individuals » since the April launch. The site has received over 100,000 prompts since a $6,000 billboard went up in San Francisco, peaking at more than 5,000 queries per hour. This art project, inspired by Wharton research on « cognitive surrender, » questions our growing reliance on AI and the phenomenon of users blindly accepting machine-generated answers.
