Latvia confirms consulate in Ukraine hit by deadly Russian airstrike, raising geopolitical risk profile for European markets

Latvia confirmed its honorary consulate in Sloviansk, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, was struck by a Russian airstrike using guided aerial bombs (KABs). The July 24 attack killed five civilians and injured nine others, also damaging at least ten private residences, a wholesale warehouse and eight vehicles, three of which were completely destroyed. Latvian and European leaders strongly condemned the strike, emphasizing the violation of diplomatic protections under the Vienna Convention. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office opened a pre-trial investigation with potential classification as a war crime. President Zelensky expressed condolences and reiterated his call for Patriot missile systems to enhance air defense capabilities.
