Japan’s Ministry of Finance confirmed Monday that it carried out a joint intervention with the U.S. Treasury Department in foreign exchange markets to strengthen the yen against the dollar. The Japanese currency strengthened by nearly 5%, rising from a forty-year low of 164 yen to 156.70 yen per dollar. The question remains whether this intervention will be enough to sustainably stabilize the Japanese currency.
