Japan posted a current account surplus of 17.43 trillion yen in the first half of 2025, equivalent to approximately $115 billion. This figure, nearly identical to the 17.51 trillion yen surplus recorded in fiscal H1 2025, is primarily driven by primary income from overseas investments, including dividends, interest, and royalties. Massive energy imports following the post-Fukushima nuclear shutdown in 2011 continue to weigh on Japan’s trade balance. This performance solidifies Japan’s position as the world’s largest net creditor nation, with record annual surpluses ranging from 29 to 30 trillion yen in 2024 and 2025.
