This decision comes amid sensitive negotiations with Oman, and with reported US involvement, regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage through which a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments transit. The talks focus on establishing safe shipping lanes and a joint traffic management system, rather than a full reopening of the Strait. Geographic coordinates for the shipping routes have reportedly been finalized, but Iran is making any further easing contingent on the behavior of the United States.
