IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that quantum computing will have a measurable impact on the company’s revenue and earnings by 2028 or 2029, and could represent one trillion dollars in value by the end of the 2030s. IBM and startup Algorithmiq presented research demonstrating quantum advantage, showing that a quantum computer can solve certain computational problems more efficiently than current classical computers. Krishna highlighted that IBM’s quantum computing revealed material behaviors previously unobservable through classical computing, with potential applications in improved batteries, advanced materials, fusion energy, and smarter medicines. IBM shares dropped 25% on July 14, their worst single-day decline on record, recovering only 2% since. According to Krishna, approximately 40% of delayed customer contracts have already closed within three to four weeks, suggesting a deferral rather than cancellation.
