The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is preparing to extract nuclear material from the Al Kibar site in eastern Syria following an agreement negotiated by the Trump administration between Syria, Israel, and Turkey. This site had been at the center of international nuclear nonproliferation concerns for nearly two decades after Israel bombed it in September 2007, destroying what Western intelligence agencies assessed was a clandestine nuclear reactor. In June 2025, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and Syria’s transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa reached an agreement granting the agency access to four critical sites. Environmental samples collected between 2024 and 2025 revealed significant anthropogenic natural uranium particles near the Al Kibar reactor.
