Roughly 25 tech giants have signed an open letter dated July 24, 2026 and titled « Open Weights and American AI Leadership », urging US policymakers not to restrict open-weight AI models. Google, OpenAI, and xAI have expressed public support but remain absent from the official signatory list, unlike Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, Hugging Face, a16z, Mistral, Dell, and IBM. The letter argues that open-weight models enhance access to technology for smaller companies and researchers, stimulate competition, and improve security through greater transparency. It draws a parallel to the 1980s open-source software movement and warns that restricting these models could hand a competitive advantage to rivals, particularly China. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reportedly shared the letter on X in what was his first-ever post on the platform.
