The Alliance de la Presse d’Information Generale, representing around 300 French daily newspapers, filed a formal complaint with France’s Autorite de la concurrence on August 11, 2026. Google’s AI Overviews have cut referral traffic to publishers’ sites by 33% to 38% within just a few weeks. APIG accuses Google of violating commitments made in 2022 under the neighboring rights framework stemming from the 2019 EU Copyright Directive. The association is requesting the regulator to apply pressure on Google similar to what was imposed on Meta in July 2026. The European Commission also opened its own investigation into Google’s AI Overviews in December 2025.
