France has banned unsolicited telemarketing calls under a new law that took effect Tuesday, aiming to protect consumers from intrusive sales pitches and fraudulent commercial practices. Individuals face fines of up to 75,000 euros per illegal call, while companies can be fined up to 375,000 euros per call. Authorities estimate that about three-quarters of people in France receive at least one unsolicited sales call every week. The law has raised concerns in Morocco, where the employment minister said up to 50,000 jobs are at risk in call centers, a sector generating more than one billion dollars in annual revenue in the country.
