The European Union has sanctioned five Iranian judges and the founder of a cyber group for systematic human rights violations in Iran. On March 16, 2026, the EU had already sanctioned 16 individuals and 3 entities, including an IT company linked to the deployment of surveillance tools during the January 2026 protests. The EU sanctions regime against Iran for human rights violations, in place since 2011, was renewed on March 30, 2026 until April 13, 2027. These measures include asset freezes, travel bans, and export restrictions on equipment that could be used for internal repression. The intensity of sanctions has increased dramatically since the 2022 protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.
