The Ethereum Foundation is moving away from the Poseidon hash function in favor of SHA and BLAKE3, two well-established alternatives backed by decades of security research. After more than a year of evaluation, the foundation launched a one million dollar cryptanalysis program for Poseidon, but growing security concerns, particularly around preimage attacks, have led the Ethereum Research community to shift away from this function. Rapid improvements in zero-knowledge proof systems have narrowed the performance gap between algebraic and traditional hashes in ZK circuits. SHA and BLAKE3 offer the additional advantage of better compatibility with existing tools and simpler evaluation in post-quantum security models. The one million dollar cryptanalysis program continues through December 2026, but momentum has clearly shifted toward traditional algorithms within the Ethereum Research community.
