Elon Musk admits he was ‘clearly wrong’ about Anthropic, and Amazon investors are paying attention

Elon Musk publicly admitted on July 9 that he was « clearly wrong » about Anthropic, calling the AI startup the « obvious leader in AI » and praising its Mythos and Fable models as the best available. This represents a major reversal from September 2025, when Musk stated that « winning was never in the set of possible outcomes for Anthropic. » Amazon has invested over $13 billion in Anthropic, including a $5 billion commitment announced in April 2026, while Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next decade. Alphabet, which is also an investor in Anthropic, finds itself in a more complicated position as Google competes with Anthropic through its own Gemini models. Musk’s admission validates Anthropic’s technological leadership and provides significant long-term revenue visibility for AWS.
