Eli Lilly has won its first approval to sell its weight-loss drug Foundayo in the U.K., marking only the second GLP-1 weight-loss pill in the European market after Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy. Orforglipron, sold as Foundayo, will be available by prescription for weight management and type 2 diabetes, pending a cost-effectiveness assessment by NICE. Unlike Wegovy, which must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, Foundayo, as a small molecule medicine, can be taken without food restrictions. Foundayo generated $98 million in second-quarter sales following its U.S. launch in April. Novo estimated that approximately 300,000 patients had started taking the Wegovy pill within the first three weeks of its U.K. launch.
