Coinbase announced the appointment of Rob Witoff as its new Chief Technology Officer on July 27, 2026. Witoff, who originally joined the company in 2014, left to co-found Unit 410, a startup focused on institutional self-custody and staking, before Coinbase acquired it in 2021. He most recently served as Head of Platform since December 2024. This appointment follows massive layoffs announced in May 2026, with approximately 700 positions cut, representing 14% of the company’s total workforce. Witoff will oversee all engineering disciplines and core infrastructure at Coinbase, with a particular focus on AI-driven productivity.
