Chamath Palihapitiya warns US ban on open-source AI could harm stock market

Venture capitalist and All-In podcast co-host Chamath Palihapitiya warned on July 18 on X that a US ban on open-source AI would saddle American companies with costs between $26 and $56 per million tokens, while foreign competitors using open-source models would pay only $0.50 to $1 for the same capability, representing a potential 50x cost disadvantage. If this cost gap persists, earnings estimates for US companies would need to be revised downward and valuations would follow. He noted that AI token costs at his own company are doubling approximately every 45 days. Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey simply replied « yes » to Palihapitiya’s post.
