An Anthropic experiment demonstrated that its Claude AI found a vulnerability in HAWK, an algorithm designed to resist quantum attacks, in 60 hours at a cost of approximately $100,000. AI primarily acts as a productivity multiplier for expert security developers. Unlike quantum computing, which remains a direct but theoretical threat since no computer capable of such attacks exists, AI is already accelerating the search for vulnerabilities in implementations. The main risk lies in the social domain, as open source project maintainers risk being overwhelmed by AI-generated change proposals.
