As of June 30, Berkshire Hathaway concentrated roughly 66% of its US equity portfolio, representing over $150 billion of its approximately $263 billion portfolio, in five companies: Apple, American Express, Coca-Cola, Bank of America, and Alphabet. Apple remains the largest position at 22%, worth approximately $58 billion, followed by American Express at 17% for $46 billion. Alphabet, the newest entrant to the top five, now exceeds $30 billion following a $10 billion private placement investment in June. This concentration is not new: the portfolio has historically oscillated between 66% and 71% in the top five holdings. Warren Buffett confirmed he personally initiated the Alphabet investment, which was subsequently approved by Greg Abel, his designated successor.
