Apple tests CXMT memory chips for iPhones and MacBooks amid AI-driven DRAM shortage

Apple has begun technical qualification testing of DRAM memory chips made by ChangXin Memory Technologies for iPhones and MacBooks sold specifically in the Chinese market. CXMT is on the US Defense Department’s list of Chinese military companies, prompting bipartisan senators to urge Apple to reject the chips on July 29, 2026. Soaring DRAM prices driven by AI demand are pushing Apple to diversify its supply sources. CXMT holds roughly 7-8% of the global DRAM market and raised approximately $8.6 billion in its IPO in July 2026. Apple is currently lobbying US officials for broader clearance to use CXMT chips beyond devices destined for China.
