The General Social Survey shows American happiness dropped an unprecedented 25 points in 2020 with no significant rebound since, as the recovery has only been 5 points. The most affected are white, high-income, and college-educated Americans, contradicting the affordability crisis narrative. Married people remain net happy while 45% of unmarried adults are now net unhappy, even though the marriage rate hasn’t changed in 15 years. Young adults aged 18 to 35 show the highest unhappiness rate at 26%. The perception of interpersonal fairness also crashed the same year, suggesting a deterioration of social cohesion.
