Amazon’s Zoox wants to put 2,500 driverless robotaxis on US roads every year

Zoox, Amazon’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary, has petitioned the NHTSA for exemptions to deploy up to 2,500 driverless robotaxis without steering wheels, brake pedals, or windshields on US roads. The fully electric vehicles can travel bidirectionally at speeds up to 120 km/h. Target cities include Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami. This petition represents a shift from research and demonstration to commercial operations. Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 for $1.2 billion.
