Alibaba’s open-source Qwen family of AI models has surpassed 3 billion downloads in six months, becoming the world’s number one and outpacing Meta, Google and domestic Chinese players. The Hangzhou-based company has open-sourced over 460 models and its ecosystem has spawned over 300,000 derivatives. According to Hugging Face’s report published on August 14, Google recorded 418 million downloads and Meta 227 million in 2026, figures far below Alibaba’s. This massive adoption demonstrates Alibaba’s strategy to gain traction beyond China in the US-China AI race.
