AI firms are hiring thousands of gig workers to train robots using wearable tech

AI companies like Micro1 and Objectways are recruiting thousands of gig workers in over 50 countries to record their physical movements using wearable cameras and sensors, providing training data for humanoid robots. Workers are paid as little as $2.60 per hour, including in India where the hourly rate is around 250 rupees. Tesla, Figure AI and Scale AI are among the companies purchasing these datasets, with the market representing over $100 million annually. Investment in humanoid robotics reached more than $6 billion in 2025, explaining the growing interest in this training data. Privacy concerns are emerging regarding recordings made in personal environments.
