An academic study accepted at USENIX Security 2026 identified 65,340 high-risk crypto addresses responsible for approximately $574.8 million in losses across Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain. Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University and Zhejiang University analyzed over 16.3 million exposed private keys from 63,004 GitHub repositories over a ten-year period from January 2015 to May 2025. The losses amount to 126,982.94 ETH and 17,726.7 BNB, totaling $574.8 million at May 2025 valuations. The study also uncovered two previously undocumented attack vectors exploiting deterministic contract addresses and EIP-7702 delegation, accounting for $15.7 million in losses. The detection methodology achieved a 99.11% precision rate during validation.
