The response rate for the JOLTS survey (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey), which tracks job openings, hires, quits, layoffs, and separations across approximately 21,000 establishments nationwide, has dropped from the high 60s percentage range to around 30-35% over the past decade. Roughly two-thirds of businesses contacted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics are no longer participating in the survey. This decline raises questions about data reliability, as companies choosing not to respond might systematically differ from those that do. The BLS began publishing detailed response rates on March 13, 2026, including historical data back to January 2015 and breakdowns by industry, region, and establishment size. Some state-level JOLTS data also shifted from monthly to annual releases beginning in January 2026.
