The Ethereum Foundation is abandoning Poseidon hashing for future layer-1 designs and pivoting to SHA or BLAKE after eight years of work on specialized proof-friendly cryptography. New binary-field proof systems, notably Binius and the Flock method, make conventional hashing functions more practical by removing the former proving penalty. Researcher Justin Drake clarified that Poseidon is not broken and no migration order has been issued. Flock benchmarks show that a single M4 Max core can perform roughly 82,000 BLAKE3 compressions, 42,000 SHA-256 compressions, and 30,000 Keccak permutations per second. Drake’s personal roadmap places production-grade leanVM around 2027 and deployments across consensus, data, and execution layers in 2028.
