On August 13, Trezor disclosed that a data breach at its shipping partner ShipMonk had exposed the personal information of approximately 13,700 recent customers, including names, phone numbers, and home addresses. Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, commented on the incident by highlighting that self-custody software wallets avoid this type of risk since they do not require shipping a physical device linking a buyer’s identity to an address. He clarified that he does not consider hardware wallets bad, but rather that they present a different risk profile. This breach follows a difficult period for hardware wallet manufacturers, who have also faced criticism from on-chain investigator ZachXBT and a firmware bug affecting Coldcard devices linked to over 100 million dollars in Bitcoin.
