Canada sanctioned on August 14 five Iranian officials affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), accusing them of obstructing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The targeted individuals, including Ali Abdollahi, Lieutenant Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani and Hamid Hosseini, hold positions in Iran’s defense apparatus, parliament and maritime shipping sector. The strait, whose narrowest point spans approximately 34 kilometers, sees about a fifth of the world’s daily oil supply transit through it, and over 1,500 ships have been blocked by Iranian forces according to the research underlying these sanctions. Under the SEMA Iran Regulations, these individuals’ Canadian-held assets are frozen and any dealings with them are prohibited for Canadian citizens and businesses. Ottawa now has 232 individuals and 260 entities on its Iran sanctions list.
