South Korea Mandates Trading Exam for Leveraged Products

From August 19, 2026, South Korea will require new retail investors to complete 5 hours of simulated trading on a demo account before purchasing single-stock leveraged ETFs. According to Goldman Sachs, 3.4% of South Korea’s adult population received margin calls, and 320,000 to 360,000 investors were forcibly liquidated. Citi estimates total losses at $38.7 billion. The measure follows a brutal crash in the semiconductor sector that triggered liquidation waves for holders of x2 ETFs on Samsung and SK Hynix.
