Iran on August 12 refused any discussion about extending its ceasefire with the United States, demanding that Washington first honor the commitments made in the interim agreement signed in June 2026. Tehran accuses Washington of violating the deal almost immediately after it was signed, an allegation at the heart of its refusal to resume negotiations. The 60-day ceasefire, which includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, is nearing expiration. Exchanges between the two countries are now being conducted through intermediaries Pakistan and Qatar, signaling the freezing of direct diplomatic channels.
