The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over the Truth API, a product from Trump Media & Technology Group that sells priority access to the president’s posts for $60,000 to $100,000 per month. The suit, backed by the watchdog group CREW, argues that these posts are government information to which all Americans should have equal access under the First Amendment. The feed has already generated over $1 million from more than ten firms, mostly high-frequency trading firms, while Trump Media posted a net loss of $238.1 million in the second quarter. The lawsuit also invokes the Fifth Amendment, calling the product an « out-and-out plan of extortion »; historical precedents like Thomson Reuters and Business Wire had already discontinued similar models under regulatory pressure.
