OpenRouter recorded 7.3 trillion tokens of agentic usage on a 7-day average as of August 10, a 14-fold increase from roughly 500 billion tokens on February 6. Over the same period, human usage reached only 1.4 trillion tokens, a more modest 2.8x increase. AI agents now consume more than five times the volume of tokens compared to humans on this model routing platform. Each agentic request, whether for coding, debugging, or automated research, uses 13 to 15 times more tokens than a typical human interaction. Cost-efficient open-weight models, particularly those developed by Chinese AI labs, have largely driven this growth.
