Geopolitical and energy analysts say Iran’s hardline demand for a Strait of Hormuz fee system would generate close to $20 billion a year, but the United States and Gulf neighbors will never accept such astronomical tolls. Tehran is calling for a 5% to 7% fee per barrel of oil, which former White House energy advisor Bob McNally called pure extortion. Such a concession would also give Iran the power to deny maritime access to any country hosting a U.S. military base.
