The Trump administration on Monday extended for 90 more days a Jones Act waiver while narrowing its scope, aiming to maintain energy supply amid the war with Iran. This third exemption, lasting until mid-November, will be limited to vessels hauling certain energy resources and will require Pentagon consultation for each individual voyage. Since the first waiver was issued on March 17, 210 maritime voyages have been completed under the exemption, moving nearly 55 million barrels of cargo. U.S. strategic petroleum reserves have fallen to their lowest level in decades, just months before the U.S. elections.
