Meta and Google lose appeal over landmark $6 million social media addiction verdict

A California judge upheld on June 10 a $6 million verdict issued in March against Meta and Google, finding both companies liable for designing deliberately addictive platforms that harmed a young user’s mental health. Meta was ordered to pay $4.2 million and YouTube $1.8 million. Defense arguments relying on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and the First Amendment were rejected, with the court determining the case concerned platform design rather than content moderation. The US Supreme Court also declined on May 26 to hear Meta’s appeal in a separate case brought by the Vermont attorney general against Instagram, allowing the lawsuit to proceed in lower courts.
