Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to create a joint venture focused on developing and producing next-generation CMOS image sensors in Kumamoto, Japan. The investment could reach more than $6 billion, with Sony holding a majority stake, reversing the dynamic in their existing JASM partnership where TSMC is the dominant player. The JV will target physical AI applications, including automotive sensors and robotics, and roll out in phases tied to market demand. Japan, which once commanded more than half of global chip production in the late 1980s but now represents only a fraction of that share, is seeking to reshore semiconductor manufacturing.
