$96 Billion Japan Bond Losses Put America Debt and Bitcoin on Alert

Japan’s four largest life insurers (Nippon Life, Dai-ichi Life, Sumitomo Life and Meiji Yasuda) reported combined unrealized losses of 15.13 trillion yen ($96 billion) on Japanese government bonds as of end of June 2026, up roughly 7% from the previous quarter. Japan remains the largest foreign holder of US Treasury securities with holdings of approximately $1.14 trillion. Bitcoin is trading above $65,000, up more than 3% in 24 hours, with markets viewing the bond losses as a symptom of Japan’s policy transition rather than an immediate financial crisis.
