Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez predicts a « generational tidal wave » in American politics driven by millennials’ anger over economic futures sacrificed by previous generations. According to Catalist data, millennials made up 25% of the electorate in 2024, up from 23% in 2020, while baby boomers dropped from 36% in 2016 to 32% in 2024. Ocasio-Cortez, herself a millennial, emphasizes that her generation has now reached maturity with families and mortgages, and is becoming decisive at the polls. Midterm primaries and 2025 elections have already seen younger candidates oust established representatives. Roughly 25% of millennial homeowners received parental help for their down payment, according to a Visa report, while baby boomers’ collective wealth is estimated at $124 trillion.
