An unidentified drone crossing from Romania exploded in Bulgarian airspace on August 8 in a sunflower field approximately 100 to 200 meters inside Bulgarian territory near the Kardam border crossing. The detonation occurred just 1 kilometer from the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline compressor station and about 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station, with no casualties reported. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed the incident and announced enhanced air defense measures along the country’s borders. Romania, a NATO ally, has not yet explained why its radar systems failed to detect the drone before it crossed into Bulgarian airspace. No group or state has claimed responsibility for the incident.
