Amazon is building the most carbon-intensive power facility ever permitted in the United States in West Texas. The GW Ranch project, developed by Pacifico Energy in Pecos County, will have a capacity of 7.65 GW and is authorized to emit up to 33 million tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the yearly output of several mid-sized countries. The campus will use 35 gas turbines to generate over 5 GW, paired with 1.8 GW of battery storage and 750 MW of solar capacity. This is Amazon’s first off-grid AI data center, with first power delivery targeted for Q1 2027. The project contrasts with Amazon’s 2040 net-zero pledge, and follows a broader industry trend, with at least 59 similar behind-the-meter gas projects totaling approximately 90 GW announced since early 2025.
