A US federal judge granted cryptocurrency exchange Bybit expedited discovery rights to trace assets stolen in the $1.5 billion North Korea-linked hack. Bybit filed the lawsuit on June 18 against North Korea, its Reconnaissance General Bureau, the Lazarus Group and 20 unnamed defendants. According to Bybit’s estimates, 90.2% of the stolen funds became untraceable after passing through mixers, cross-chain bridges and over-the-counter dealers. Only 9.8% of the stolen assets were traced to identifiable wallets, with 5.3%, approximately $75.5 million, frozen or recovered. Bybit is seeking the return of the stolen assets along with compensatory, punitive and treble damages under the US RICO Act.
