Crypto Has ‘Ticking Clock’ Problem, Former SEC Official Says

Former SEC official John Reed Stark has warned about the risks posed by quantum computing to the cryptocurrency sector. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that within three to four years, everyone should be « rather paranoid » about this threat. Lee Reiners from Duke University published an article calling on financial regulators to prepare contingency plans for digital assets vulnerable to quantum breakthroughs. According to Stark, the situation is particularly concerning as crypto infrastructure is increasingly integrating into traditional finance through spot ETFs, bank custody and stablecoin legislation. The industry is nonetheless taking action: Galaxy Digital launched its Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative and Blockstream made quantum security its first major research priority.
