The Biden administration explored imposing emergency limits on refined petroleum product exports, including gasoline, to lower pump prices ahead of the midterm elections. At the time, the U.S. was exporting roughly 755,000 barrels of fuel per day. History shows, however, that such measures generate supply chain inefficiencies and fail to produce durable price relief for consumers. The proposal never became actual policy, and under the Trump administration by early 2026, an official stated that restrictions on oil and gas exports were not under consideration.
