The NFL’s previous push into Europe lost $400 million. Why it’s trying again

The NFL will stage its first competitive game in France on October 25 at Stade de France, as part of a record nine-game international run this season. London will have hosted 45 games by the end of this season, making it the league’s most mature overseas market. Melbourne and Paris, where the fan base has grown past 14 million, are expected to draw substantial crowds. A previous attempt, NFL Europa, ran up approximately $400 million in losses over 16 years. The league is targeting $25 billion in revenue by 2027, up from $23 billion last year, by focusing on media rights, sponsorship deals, and merchandise sales in Europe.
