Google assembles $44 billion financing machine to challenge Nvidia’s AI chip dominance

Google has built a $44 billion financing mechanism through off-balance-sheet lease backstops to accelerate adoption of its custom TPU chips. The company has pledged guarantees covering approximately 10 data center projects representing 2.4 gigawatts of capacity, allowing operators to secure better debt terms in exchange for using its TPUs. This program builds on a previous roughly $35 billion backstop commitment to support Anthropic’s data center financing, with Anthropic pledging to use up to 1 million TPUs. Google is also reportedly negotiating a roughly $100 million investment in Fluidstack to further expand TPU-hosting capacity. This strategy aims to create an entire ecosystem built around its custom silicon rather than Nvidia’s GPUs, using structured finance to remove adoption friction.
