Why CME wants phone traders slinging leveraged Nvidia contracts at 3 AM after earnings drop

Share

CME launched 77 single-stock futures contracts (55 standard and 22 Micro) on July 27 covering Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Alphabet. These contracts trade 23 hours a day, Sunday through Friday with a one-hour pause, giving investors a tool to react to earnings releases while US markets are closed. Standard contracts represent 100 shares while Micro contracts represent 10 shares, with the smaller version specifically designed for retail traders using mobile apps. This launch follows OneChicago’s failed 2002 experiment, though the market environment has shifted significantly with commission-free trading and widespread retail options adoption. The 55 underlying companies generate more than 200 billion dollars in average daily notional activity and represent 55% to 65% of both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 by index weight.
